The idea for the Question Authority campaign began in the fall of 2007 when the Alcohol & Health Education Office received feedback from a freshman survey regarding their alcohol use. We found that roughly 1/3 of these students reported a family history of alcoholism, about 10% had no idea about their family history. This information was coupled with other feedback finding that some of the most helpful information students took away from our programs revolved around the relationship between a student’s family history of dependence and their own likelihood of developing dependency.
In the Spring of 2008, the University of Kentucky’s Alcohol & Health Education Office (AHEO) received a donation from Brown-Forman to further develop the Question Authority campaign as well as the office’s peer education program. For the past two years, the AHEO has been working to develop an effective campaign as well as a curriculum for institutions and schools to use that can help promote the open and honest dialogue between parents and their children. In addition to this information, the AHEO has developed other social marketing campaigns that help bring to light certain social issues that are especially particular to high-risk drinkers.
