THE HOOCH

What's this?

“Hooch” (a.k.a., “Hunch Punch” or “Jungle Juice”) is an alcoholic concoction typically created for large parties. Although it has a fun name and may look like a fruit juice, here are some things that you need to know about it:

  • It is typically made with at least one “handle” of pure grain alcohol, which is 75% to 95% alcohol.
  • When mixed with the juices, the drink is still conservatively 30% alcohol.
  • Because of its high sugar content, one 16 oz. cup of Hooch is roughly 400 calories (not counting any added fruit).
  • Men, who naturally have a higher tolerance to alcohol drink light beer (5% alcohol) or other drinks that still aren’t as strong as Hooch.
  • Women, who naturally have a lower tolerance to alcohol, typically drink Hooch (30% alcohol). They also drink it in large amounts because the high sugar content masks the taste of alcohol.
  • Women who drink Hooch at parties are putting their health and safety at risk as it is more likely for sexual assault or unplanned sexual activity.
  • Although there is no research on Hooch and sexual assault, the fact remains that alcohol contributes to roughly 97,000 reports of sexual assault every year by those in college (mostly women) between the ages of 18 and 24.
